Home care overseen and provided by licensed nurses, physical, speech or occupation therapists is called skilled home care. This level of care and service is available as a Medicare beneficiary per a physician order. As a general rule, the senior must be home bound or unable to leave the home other than doctor visits. The nursing care may also be augmented by a CNA, certified nursing assistant, for ADLs. Often this coverage requires family to participate in training for long term or sustained care of the senior at home. Speak to your doctor about whether the senior is appropriate for this care. Often the skilled nurse or therapy provider can intervene and prevent adverse outcomes from falls and medication compliance or interaction issues.
Some private insurance companies and some long term care insurance policies will pay for this type of care in the home. Read your insurance policy closely. You will need to explore these coverages with an insurance company representative. Some insurance policies will also cover medication set up for a limited period of time. Review all insurance policies for coverage. Even life insurance or disability insurance may have limited coverage for these home based services.
